Belgrade, March 2011. Adult education society and Institute for International Cooperation of the German Adult Education Association – dvv international – Head Office for South East Europe have successfully organised the kick off meeting CONFINTEA VI in action. The main goal of this event was the presentation of the Action Plan “Belém Framework for Action” – the final document of the Sixth International Conference on Adult Education CONFINTEA VI (Brazil, December 2009), as well as setting priorities for development in this area in Serbia. Participants who have largely contributed to the successful realization of the meeting, were delegations of the Commission of Serbia for UNESCO, the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Serbia, the Ministry of Economy and Regional Development, the former Ministry of Human and Minority Rights, the National Employment Service, the Statistical Office, Department of adult education at the Faculty of Philosophy, Center for Vocational and Adult Education, Association of Serbian adult educators and NGOs. Also, because of the importance of adult literacy specified in Belém Framework for Action, the event was attended by the representatives of the project “Second Chance”. The meeting was opened by Ph.D Katarina Popovic, representative of dvv international, regional office. Bogoljub Lazarevic, Assistant Minister of Education and Science during his opening statement stressed the importance of developing adult education and learning for Serbia. Ph.D Snezana Medic introduced the chronology of the UNESCO conferences on adult education and emphasized that adult education is a litmus test of a society. Afterwards, Ph.D Katarina Popovic presented the latest in a series of conference CONFINTEA VI, and Mirjana Milanovic, head of the Working Group on Adult Education of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Republic of Serbia, outlined the progress in implementation of the recommendations in Serbia. Norbert Kuijpers, project coordinator CONFINTEA VI, dvv international, has introduced guidelines for Serbia and eventually the participants have defined priorities in the areas of policy, management, funding, participation and quality in adult education through the working group discussions. The brochure „Living and learning for sustainable future: the strenght of Adult Education“, published by dvv international – Head Office for South East Europe was presented and distributed to the participants.
