The beginnings of the Faculty of Philosophy date back to year 1838 when, by the Prince Miloš Decree, the Lyceum School was established in the city of Kragujevac. Today, the Faculty of Philosophy is a modern institution of higher education that follows all current trends in educational systems across the globe.

At present, the Faculty of Philosophy teaching stuff employs about 255 professors and enrolls around 6000 students at all academic levels offering bachelor, master and doctoral programs for nine different renowned departments, some of which with a history over hundred years long: Department of Philosophy, Department of Sociology, Department of Psychology, Department of Pedagogy and Andragogy, Department of Ethnology and Anthropology, Department of History, Department of History of Art, Department of Archaeology, and Department of Classics. Educational, scientific, research and development activities of the Faculty of Philosophy are realized with accordance to the Higher Education Act No. 12/76/2005/01, and further legal amendments.

As a part of Bologna Declaration, the Faculty of Philosophy has reformed undergraduate studies, and improved master and doctoral programs as well. As a result, the graduate, master and doctoral levels now offer over 800 different study courses within nine departments. The introduction of one-semester courses and new evaluation methods, which gives greater weight to practical training and to intensive research projects, made the Faculty of Philosophy academic degree standards and quality assurance standards more compatible with European standards of higher education. These modifications and adjustments have caused for the Faculty of Philosophy to become a modern institution of higher education that not only follows all current trends in educational systems across the globe but comes forward in some as well. The reformed academic programs and new evaluation system have allowed not only students of the Faculty of Philosophy to transfer earned credits and continue education at any institution of higher education in Europe but they have also allowed international students enrolled in other universities to continue their education at the Faculty of Philosophy. The relationship with world’s leading universities and scientific institutions has been established, and the student and professor exchange programs have started developing and improving as well establishing the Faculty of Philosophy to become a significant element in generating contemporary higher education tendencies.

Despite all these transformations, the Faculty of Philosophy, which celebrates July 1st as the Day of the Faculty of Philosophy, has remained its identity as it continued to nurture the tradition of over 170 years long, ascertaining itself as the efficient elite institution of higher education capable of responding to all tasks of our present time. Today, the Faculty of Philosophy is not only a place where lectures and science projects are being conducted; today, the Faculty of Philosophy is a place of student gathering, a place of debates and sporting events, a place of book promotions and conventions, a place of growing and exchanging luminous ideas.

Department of Pedagogy and Andragogy has its roots in the first systematic lectures about popular education and learning at the Faculty of Philosophy in 1934/35 and 1935/36. The Chair for Pedagogy as an independent part of the Faculty of Philosophy was established in 1950 and later became the Department of Pedagogy in 1962. In 1961/62 Andragogy (adult education) was introduce for the first time into curriculum of Group of Pedagogy. There were some common courses (2 years), obligatory for all students of Pedagogy, and after that one of three majors could be chosen (‘Theory of Adult Education with Methodologies of Adult Education’ was one of them).

In 1979 the Study Group for Andragogy was established as the separate entity within the Department of Pedagogy and Andragogy. The Study Group for Andragogy employs 18 professors and assistants. Most of them are engaged as researchers in the projects of the Institute for Pedagogy and Andragogy at the same Faculty. Today, the Faculty of Philosophy is not only a place where lectures and science projects are being conducted; today, the Faculty of Philosophy is a place where students gather, a place of debate and sporting events, a place of book launches and conferences, a place of for the exchange luminous ideas, a place of civil courage where students and civic protests for freedom and democracy have occurred. Active members come from most part of Europe. The Secretariat of ESREA is located at the Department of Behavioural Sciences and Learning at Linköping University in Sweden. ESREA is in legal terms a non-profit organization governed under Swedish law.

ESREA’s mission is to support the advancement of high quality research on the education and learning of adults in Europe by sustaining: co-operation among researchers, in the European context conceived in the broadest geographical terms; development of research and dissemination of results in all areas of adult and continuing education; training of early researchers and continuing professional development of researchers; relationships with other European organizations and the appropriate national organizations.

The history of ESREA begins in December 1991, with a draft proposal circulated among researchers of different disciplines, in conferences and seminars, aimed to create a forum for research on adult education. The first Steering Committee, convened by Barry Hake and chaired by Kjell Rubenson, agreed to established a democratically governed society, with individual and institutional membership, and triennial elections of the SC. Its core activities would be research networks, a triennial conference, publications, support for PhD students, and a newsletter. Research networks, a key priority ever, sustain active co-operation among researchers through regular seminars, joint publications, and training of early researchers. They are the lifeblood of ESREA. From 1998 to 2012 the SC, chaired by Henning Salling Olesen, acted to extend ESREA’s scope, to foster publications and participation, especially from Southern and Eastern Europe. In 2007 the secretariat was brought to Linköping, with Andreas Fejes as secretary. Among the many actions taken, the publication since 2010 of The European Journal for Research on the Education and Learning of Adults [RELA] has celebrated richness and diversity of research, not least by open access and inclusive linguistic policies. From 1995 to 2016, Triennial Conferences have celebrated the evolution of its intellectual agenda, from themes of social participation and discussions on the controversial role of education in the “learning society”, to the challenges of transition and diversity, and more recently the constraints and resources for the future of adult education.
